The Mice Were in Charge All Along

The Earth was a ten-million-year computer programme, and the mice commissioned it. We were the lab equipment.

The hyper-intelligent pan-dimensional beings we knew as mice

Here is the twist that still delights me. In the story, the Earth is not a planet at all. It is an enormous organic computer, built to compute the Ultimate Question, and the whole ten-million-year programme was commissioned by hyper-intelligent, pan-dimensional beings who, in our dimension, appear as mice.

Every white mouse anyone ever ran through a maze was, quietly, running the maze on us.

Why the myth lands

It is a perfect little parable about hidden authorship. The thing you assume is yours, central, and obviously the point turns out to be a component in someone else’s experiment. It is humbling in the best way.

  • We are rarely the centre of the story we think we are starring in.
  • The real designers are often the ones you dismissed as scenery.
  • A bit of humility about that is not defeat. It is just accuracy.

I find this genuinely freeing rather than bleak. If the mice are in charge, the pressure is off to be the protagonist. You can simply do good work, keep track of your towel, and enjoy the maze.
