Traffic & Camping

The Legends of Traffic & Camping volunteer their time to work 4-hour shifts and get to meet happy smiley Blazers as they arrive at the event. It’s a great intro to volunteering if you are a first timer.

Our Legends of Traffic and Camping help safely guide vehicles into the event and campgrounds, and they give participants handy tips on safe camping and vehicle parking. Training is provided. Do a shift with a friend and make more Blazers friends while you’re at it.

We will even deck you out in the sexiest of hi-vis vests whistles and the dopest of light wands.

Greeters – The Portal Guardians

Greeters are the excitable grinning face and wildly waving hands of Blazing Swan, awaiting their chance to welcome every single participant home. Ready at any moment to dance a dance or sing a song or even mime – or rhyme, about the Eleven Principles, the values of which our community at Jilakin Rock City hold ever so dear. As Greeters we hold ceremony, we greet, we welcome, we hold space, we are the portal guardians there to invite one and all home to play, and make the absolute utmost out of their Blazing Swan stay.

The Jilakin Rock Rangers

RANGERS RECRUITMENT IS CLOSED FOR 2026 – UNLESS YOU’VE BEEN A RANGER IN THE PAST.  IN THAT CASE WE STILL WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU.  CONTACT RANGERS@BLAZINGSWAN.COM.AU

Jilakin Rock Rangers are participants who volunteer a portion of their time at Blazing Swan in service of the safety and well-being of the Blaze community. Rangers act as non-confrontational community mediators, providers of reliable information and facilitators of public safety.

Day or night, pairs of Rangers can be found walking the streets of Jilakin Rock City, engaging with the community, enjoying the art and always ready to help sort things out.

Department of Public Works (DPW)

Jilakin Rock City’s Department of Public Works (DPW) is the crew dedicated to installing and building the infrastructure of Jilakin Rock City (think plumbing, electrics, lighting, fencing, signage etc). DPW works collaboratively with all Blazing Swan Departments to ensure that the foundation is laid for event services, theme camps and participants to come in and do their part and then we pack it all down again without leaving a trace.

The days are long and we work hard but we have a great time doing it!

The DPW Team are predominantly looking for people with trade and event experience. If you don’t have a trade or any tickets but you are hard-working, with a drive to learn and a can do attitude, you are also welcome on the DPW crew.

There are 3 work phases for DPW at Blazing Swan.

Set-up: We will start work at the end of March and work as a team to get the site ready for the event. This phase includes marking out the camping and theme camp areas, banging in (lots) of star pickets, putting up signage, laying the power grid, setting up marquees, assisting other teams, theme camps and artists etc

During Event: DPW crew works throughout the event to maintain generator fuel levels, switch on/off lighting towers, assist other teams as well as general maintenance and repairs. We run rotating shifts of 8 hours to upkeep the site and respond to repair/help requests. While on shift, volunteers must be sober and able to operate vehicles and machinery.

Pack Down: Pack down commences from 12pm on the last day the event end and lasts for roughly a week. It involves removing everything installed pre-event and leaving the site cleaner than we found it.

Individuals may volunteer either specifically for set up, pack down or both and everyone will be expected to do a couple of shifts during the event.

Your basics will be covered while you are volunteering: all meals and snacks provided, access to laundry/kitchen facilities and hot showers, internet access (yes we have a StarLink) and to the wellness crew. As a DPW volunteer you will receive:

– A DPW shirt.
– A discounted or gifted ticket dependent on how many hours volunteered
– Other benefits that will be shared once registered

If you’ve managed to read this far and would like to join our motley crew, please apply.  We look forward to talking to you soon!

Wellness

Wellness Crew:  As the saying goes, it takes a village to build a city. It takes a lot of sweat blood and tears to turn dust into dreams, and we want to make those building the city’s lives as comfortable as possible. We are looking for massage therapists, musicians, yoga/wellness instructors to help make the build weeks not just a site camp, but a friendly village

Event Assistants will assist and support the Event Shift Manager in all of these duties.  In the dynamic environment of Blazing Swan with 8 to 12-hour shifts, both Event Managers and Event Assistants play vital roles in ensuring the event’s success, safety, and adherence to its core principles. Effective communication, quick decision-making, and strong leadership are essential skills for both positions.

Leave No Trace – The MOOP Troupe

The MOOP Troupe, our players on the Playa, are here to help us achieve the transformation from being ‘Totally Present’ while we’re here, to ‘Leaving No Trace’ when we’re gone.  They travel our city disguised as your average Jilakin Rock City citizens.  When they come across any Matter Out Of Place (MOOP) they spring into action to set things right.

MOOP is not necessarily rubbish, it is simply something that doesn’t belong on the ground. It may be a beer can or a food wrapper but just as likely it’s a piece of someone’s costume that has fallen off during their travels, or useful times that have been blow out of camp and into the city by a gust of wind.  The MOOP Troupe aren’t there to pick up your rubbish, their role it to help you understand why it’s so important that you do that.  We’ll also educate people on the other aspects of Leave No Trace – how to avoid bringing to Blazing Swan in the first place, where to find the recycling facilities, and how to cart your rubbish and waste home with you at the end of the day.

If you love a Principle, and that Principle is ‘Leave No Trace’ come and walk the talk with us.  Join the MOOP Troupe!

Leavers – The Close Circle Crew

Are you a person who never wants to leave Blazing Swan? Do you love the Greeters experience or are you keen to make sure Blazers are safe and ready for their drive home? Leavers is designed to close the circle that we open at Greeters. We give Blazers a feel-good send off that they deserve as they leave after packing down their camps.  We check on their trailers and vehicles and give the opportunity to mentally prepare for re-entry into the default world.

The Sanctuary

Are you empathetic and passionate about supporting people going through challenging and vulnerable moments? Then we are the team for you!

The Sanctuary Team are seeking volunteers to support their fellow Blazers by providing 24-hour assistance across the event. Volunteers will work closely with our event safety partners to provide support to those in need of a quiet and safe place.

We are looking for people with experience and/or qualifications in mental health, psychiatric, social work, and other support fields. If this sounds like you, then please apply for our team today!

Effigy Crew

Once on Effigy, always on Effigy. Team members tend to come back year after year. That means only a few spots are available every year for new team members. Have you got what it takes?

The Arts DERPartment – Artist Support Crew

Art is at the heart of the Blazing Swan community and experience. Without Art there is no Blaze!

The Arts Department is a creative team of do-ers. We’re the hands and hearts that love nurturing the arts and thrive on making things happen.

We’re putting together a small artist support crew to help out on site pre-event.

Have you got experience in festival site builds, art installations and or structural engineering? Are you passionate about supporting artists and working in a team?

Then you might be keen to join the artist support crew!

Fire Team

The Fire Team is the hottest team at Blazing Swan! They look after all things burning at the event; from advising on fire safety, inspecting burn barrels, holding art burn perimeters, issuing Burn Permits, and setting burning art on fire. The Fire Team is there to help support and facilitate MORE FIRE! at the event, while maintaining event and participant safety.

The Landing Pad

Join The Landing Pad!

We all know that festivals can be wild sometimes. In the midst of music, costumes, people, food for thought, inspiration, and all kinds of colourful stimuli, we can easily get overwhelmed. During these times, we may experience strong emotions and face overwhelming realisations. We don’t want anybody in our community to feel alone. Holding an open, kind and welcoming space to nest in during these times is important.

At The Landing Pad, we wish to create a nurturing ground for those who need time to just breathe, away from the hustle and bustle of the party through their personal journey and support, where we can. During the day, we will also focus on integration, facilitating discussions about peer support and exploring ways of harm reduction.

Interested in becoming a part of this impactful initiative? Apply to join our peer support team and build and strengthen lifelong skills in how to authentically hold space, learn about psycare, share your gifts, and nurture those seeking support within a non-biased and non-judgmental container. Contribute to creating a safe and compassionate community at Blaze this year!

As a not-for-profit we have a team of year-round volunteers that form the BlazingSwan Incorporated organisation. We work together under the guidance of a Committee and Membership to build community and put on a great burn event each Easter here in Western Australia. Positions in the Blazing Swan organisation require skills like leadership and dedication. If you are someone who is driven to contribute, open to learning and collaborating, organised and keen as a bean to work in a team – then you might have just found your new home!
